The pain and struggle of everyday life often has unexpected consequences on those closest to us. Too often people are forgotten and left behind when the hardships that come with living cloud the vision of others. As Edgar Allen Poe once said, “They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night.” In author Lisa L. White’s novel “Any Way Out”, a young woman struggling with a dysfunctional family life seeks an escape from her life by any means necessary.
In this book, the author showcases the life of a young woman named Ashley, who is caught in between two parents who are so wrapped up in their own lives, anger and hatred for one another even after their divorce, that they take out their frustrations on Ashley. As a result, Ashley begins heading down a dangerous path filled with drugs, alcohol, partying and more that brings her to some dark places. Seeking to escape her messed up life, Ashley seeks freedom any way she can. Now for readers there should be a note of a warning as to themes used and explored in this novel. Readers can expect to see storylines involving drug and alcohol abuse, physical assault, self-harm and suicide as well. With that being said, the author does an excellent job of exploring this story in a tone of voice which feels personal and connected to the reader instantly.
This is a book written for those who enjoy books filled with drama, emotional character development, stories filled with dysfunctional families and stories that dive into the deep emotional core of growing up in such a family and the mental health struggles that could arise as a result. The author’s ability to connect the reader with Ashley and her struggles made this story more relatable and drew the reader in instantly. Along the way Ashley finds others to attempt to forge a bond with, hoping to fill the void left behind by both of her parents. It is a sad reality that faces too many young people these days, and this novel does an excellent job of focusing on the challenge of transitioning from childhood to adulthood during those formative years.
While the book is mild in length and reads at an even pace, the story is gripping and pulls the read in immediately. Heartbreaking to watch unfold, the tale is one that showcases the importance of surrounding oneself with those who will care for them and have their best interest at heart, and for breaking out of toxic environments that will only foster negative and harmful thoughts all around.
