One of the toughest and most challenging professions a person can undertake is that of a farmer. Whether they are working the crops and livestock, or own the farm outright, farmers are responsible for producing a large portion of the world’s food supply, making them essential to any nation’s workforce. As Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, “Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil and you’re a thousand miles from the corn field.”
In Annie Farmer’s My Country Story: Growing Up As The Farmer’s Daughter, the author relates a short yet memorable memoir about her life. Exploring what life was like growing up as the daughter of a farmer in the South-East of the United States, the author relays the stories not only of her youth and life overall, but of her family history and a truly memorable and horrific moment in which her uncle nearly murdered her father. Blending this into the everyday life and experiences she had on the farm and even her later years with her husband and leaving the farm behind, the author tells a relatable and personal story of not only farm life, but of family overall.
This is a unique and punctual read. The narrative focuses greatly on the author’s family and life within it. From the crops the author’s father grew and the rural community she grew up in to the troubles with her uncle and her journey that took her and her family away from her childhood home, this was a truly engaging story. The author’s direct and descriptive writing style really brought her story to life in the reader’s mind, and even showcased a knowledge of research as she went into her family history going back centuries and even the standing of farmers overall throughout history.
This is the perfect read for anyone with an interest in farming and agriculture, family histories and memoirs that relay a person’s personal experiences to the reader. As a fan of the genre, it was fascinating to see the author’s life play out across this short read, and really made me as a reader feel immersed into the farm life the author grew up in.
Memorable, fast-paced yet perfectly written, author Annie Farmer’s My Country Story: Growing Up As The Farmer’s Daughter is a must-read memoir. The book does an excellent job of capturing the emotions and history behind small-town, rural farm life.
