Contemporary novelist Tom Robbins once said, “We’re our own dragons as well as our own heroes, and we have to rescue ourselves from ourselves.” In author Tanya Fyfe’s novel Secrets Abound in Missing Lake, this message is taken both figuratively and literally as one young man’s journey through adolescence into the beginning stages of adulthood are tied into the discovery of the existence of dragons, and learning he is destined to be a part of the dragon’s lives.
The novel is the third book in a series written by the author, which showcases the journey of Luke Houser and his life adjusting to a new town, new friends, emerging feelings he doesn’t fully understand and his passion for animals, all while learning his connection to the mysterious dragons he and his family have come to know and love.
The author does a marvelous job of blending the fantasy elements of the story in a natural way, focusing on the protagonist’s daily life and his journey overall and keeping the dragons as a natural side plot to the character’s own struggles. Now as someone who has not previously read the first two novels in this series, I found myself easily able to jump into Luke’s story overall. While the backstory may have been a mystery, the overall journey of the character and his connection to this fantastic creature felt real and full of wonder, something a truly great fantasy novel brings to any story.
The story itself was well written. It is perfect for anyone who enjoys fantasy tales, especially when put into a modern setting. Young readers who enjoy tales of growing up through high school, finding your passion in life and discovering their own inner power will absolutely love this story, as well as anyone who is passionate about animals and pets, and taking care of the beautiful creatures which inhabit our planet.
As a fan of fantasy driven novels, this was a truly fantastic read. Full of humor, great family dynamics and a captivating protagonist that is both relatable and a modern day dragon whisperer that any fantasy fan can enjoy, this novel is the perfect read, and will have readers clamoring to read the first two books while craving a fourth novel to continue this epic tale.
