American doctor and NSA astronaut Mae Jemison once said, “The really wonderful thing that happened to me when I was in space was this feeling of belonging to the entire universe.” In author Richard Chamberlain’s sci-fi novel Tick Tock Universe: A Harvester Adventure Series, the story of Jerome and both his human and alien allies continues as he explores just how much the protagonist does belong to the universe and beyond, and the secrets the universe is holding.
In the book, readers pick up after the events of the first book, Echoes Through Time. Captured by a mysterious Crystal Race of beings, Jerome is forced into imprisonment for crimes committed against the race. Consumed with thoughts and memories of his long lost love Katie and his other companions, Jerome finds himself meeting a strange being within his confinement that alters his perception of the universe as a whole, while his alien ally AK enters his prison in another dimension and returns him home, leading to the true intentions and origins of the Harvesters and the Crystal Race’s mission.
This sequel greatly expands on the story established within the first book, while adding new and exciting developments that hold infinite possibilities. While the author does have a few instances here with grammatical errors and past/present tense writing changes, the author’s ability to infuse scientific theory and possibility into a large sci-fi mythology and fantastic character expansion overshadows those few instances greatly. The writing and story development of these alien races and heavy sci-fi themes greatly reminds me of the storytelling of shows like Stargate SG-1 and Battlestar Galactica, focusing on character development just as equally as mythology building and incorporating politics/government issues in the process, as well as all the fun and fascinating sci-fi themes of aliens, time travel, and more.
Any fan of the sci-fi genre will absolutely love this book. As a fan myself of this genre, I found myself intrigued by the scientific theories posited by the author as fact and it drew me into the narrative instantly. One in particular that has always fascinated me has to be the inclusion of the multiverse theory, which is touched upon early in the story and continues to grow throughout the narrative. It’s a fantastic example of the author expanding the book’s storyline while also allowing the readers to think about the possibilities both within the book’s premise and the character’s lives overall.
This is a must read book for any die-hard sci-fi fan out there. Filled with fantastic, mind-bending adventures, wonderful and growing character development and a literal out of this world mythology that leaves room for so many possible stories to be told, readers will be on the edge of their seat as they near the book’s final pages. The reader will be in awe as the final chapter of Jerome is told, and readers will be enthralled with the direction the story takes.
