Where is My Home? by author Joan Romney Groves is the quintessential children’s story; one with adventure, animals acting in their natural ways, love between humans and cats, and laden with morals galore throughout the lessons. What’s more impressive, is it’s based on a true story!
Award-winning author Joan Romney Groves has created a re-make of her story, this time with many more artistically computer enhanced illustrations, helping convey the story of Sonic, a feral kitten not liking humans, and thusly being brought out to a farm and let loose among the wild cats and other animals. What Sonic finds out is that the world can be a challenging place to survive among the competition for food, safety and companionship – verses the comfort and love of a human family’s adoption.
Being born to Danny’s family along with three other littermates, Sonic was always feisty, scratching Danny and not wanting to be around humans. As the other kitties found homes, nobody wanted Sonic. So, Danny’s mother decided to bring him to a remote farm, 30 miles from home, where they thought Sonic would be happier in the company of the wild farm animals and scavengers for food. The first day was fun for Sonic, but as time went on, it was a tough lesson for Sonic as he was skunked, nipped at by a weasel, chased by a dog, kicked by a fisherman, and almost run over by cars when crossing a highway. Nothing seemed to go right for Sonic as he wondered aimlessly for months, nine months to be exact. Then, miraculously he heard Danny’s voice, and recognized the home where he was born. “Is this my home?” he thought, and yes, it was. Danny asked his mom if they could keep Sonic, and she agreed because Sonic has changed into becoming a loving cat.
Like a Disney story, such as The Incredibly Journey, where 3 animals travel 200 miles across the Canadian wilderness to find their home, Sonic must have had a guiding angel bringing him past a Christmas nativity scene, avoiding dangers, and traveling miles and months of a journey to once again, finally be home.
The perfect read for a heart-warming and unforgettable tale, Joan Romney Groves’ Where is My Home? is a must-have for every family library. A story which will undoubtably have children thankful be being in their own home, tucked into their own bed, and not having to venture through the pitfalls and perils Sonic needed to go through to finally be in a safe and loving home will resonate in the youngster’s dreams. In all the world we roam, there’s still no place like home – just ask Sonic!
