Aimee McCormack is new to small-town Chamberlain, starting to make new friends and learn the ropes in the town. She was widowed after a short marriage to an abusive man. She struggled with doubt and loss of faith for years. Her teenage son Jeremy begins attending a military academy nearby, so she has to adjust to being separated from him as well.
As a single mom, Aimee juggles two jobs to give her son what he wants and needs. She’s wary of entering into a new relationship with a man, so she tries to politely avoid spending more time with Rob Dalton, a local contractor who repeatedly shows interest in her. Meanwhile, Rob is grieving the death of his wife and grandfather. Love grows between Aimee and Rob, but it’s not an easy or simple path. Can they overcome their differences in wealth and lifestyle? Will their past trauma throw the relationship off course forever?
Author Audrey Marr has an old-fashioned, charming sensibility to the characters and the storytelling in this book. Life in Chamberlain revolves around Sunday church services, Bible study and walks in the park. Neighbors help each other out when the flu strikes or tires go flat. Men open car doors for women. We see families sharing Thanksgiving and Christmas traditions and grilling hotdogs after a summertime baseball game. The story seems to take place before the use of social media and Internet searches. Instead, entertainment includes model airplanes, arcades, rollerblading, star gazing, and pheasant hunting.
Audrey Marr is good at developing the two main characters. Aimee is strong, resilient, and self-reliant. She’s a loving and attentive mom. Her spiritual journey is compelling. Rob is sensible, caring and generous. Aimee’s son readily accepts him. The dialog and the character development sets this book apart.
This is a story rooted in Christian tradition and Christian values. Characters quote scripture to each other, sometimes with some humor added. Often, we hear the characters’ prayers directly. The story shows the value of working hard, trusting God, and letting go of bitterness which can threaten to take over your heart when hardships build up in your life.
Aimee’s Restoration is a worthwhile read which can give you hope that people can forgive, learn from their mistakes, and find new love that restores and heals. Overall, it’s a nice love story that you will want to believe in.
