When thinking about what makes an amazing children’s book, for me, the first thing that comes to mind is worthwhile life lessons at the forefront of the book. They can teach a variety of life lessons, of course, but the one goal should always be for the child to learn this valuable lesson that could influence their life both in the short-term and the long-term. I feel that is what will be experienced by children everywhere when they read The Great Little Tailor by Isabel Cintra with illustrations by Zeka Cintra.
In The Great Little Tailor we meet Akin, a young boy who assists his father, Jafar, who is the local tailor in their small village. They barely get by each and every day with the little money they make. They have just enough to put food on their table but eventually, it becomes nearly impossible to keep their little business going when they incur too much debt from the fabric shop. Jafar is beginning to lose hope that he and his son will ever get to a point where they will lead a comfortable life, one without serious struggles. But Akin refuses to give up hope.
So, when Akin comes across a flyer that King Radar’s daughter, Princess Isa is getting married and needs a wedding gown made, Akin knows he and his father must enter the contest to win the prize of gold coins being offered to better their lives and keep their business alive. This tale is such a wonderful read for children and is one that will surely teach them the value of not giving up hope. It is so important to realize you should never give up on your dreams, no matter how young or old you are.
As a child, learning from a young age your self-worth and believing in yourself to make your wildest dreams come true is an invaluable character trait not everyone is able to discover on their own. A book such as this will surely help them in that process while also showing beautiful illustrations to help them further understand the plot of the story as it plays out before them. To me, the best part of this book is the fact that it can easily help a parent have an open, age-appropriate discussion about life’s struggles and how to overcome them. And most importantly, how to not give up on yourself, ever.
