Far too often in life, we as a people forget just how much we struggle, and how people around us are struggling as well. It is easy to take a person at face value and make snap judgements, but there is usually far more to a person than a single moment, and sometimes two people who would typically be at odds, do in fact have shared experiences which could bring them together. As actress Adrienne C. Moore once said, “The truth is, we all face hardships of some kind, and you never know the struggles a person is going through. Behind every smile, there’s a story of a personal struggle.”

In author Callista Bowright’s The Sixth of September, the writer showcases a powerful narrative of two women, a lifetime of struggle and pain each of them has endured, and the shocking events that could very well bring them together. Olivia comes from a simple Lancashire background and has struggled through a traumatic childhood and tumultuous life in general, while Sophie has come from a life of privilege as a child only to find financial, physical and emotional trauma further down in her life. Later on in their lives, both women come together after a shocking turn of events, and soon find that what could have been a rivalry soon becomes a bond that cannot be broken.

The author presents a heartbreaking and emotional story to readers, closely examining the way tragedies and trauma can impact a person’s life physically, emotionally and mentally – all at once. The author does a fantastic job of not only delving into each protagonist’s backstories and history, but anyone who reads the author’s bio in the beginning will realize that this fictional story has some ties to the author’s own life, making this novel truly compelling and investing for readers.

This is the perfect read for those who enjoy lengthy dramas with a focus on stories that showcase women who must overcome great struggles to find empowerment and strength within themselves and the bonds they share with others. As a fan of this type of story, I found myself drawn to the narrative immediately, as the author presents the story with a descriptive and thoughtful writing style that brings all those powerful emotions to the surface immediately in the reader’s minds.

A truly emotional, lengthy yet memorable novel, author Callista Bowright’s The Sixth of September is a must-read story that promises layered storytelling and intense character growth for the protagonists. The story does an excellent job of blending the character’s arcs together and highlights the impact childhood trauma and loss can have on a person and their relationships overall, as well as the power that comes with empowerment – and the bonds we share with those who have endured their own pain.
