Author Interview with Brian Ray Brewer

Today we are talking to Brian Ray Brewer.

HBR:  When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I think I always did.  I can remember writing a family newspaper at age eight.

HBR:  How long does it take you to write a book?
I think I wrote one in less than two months.  Another took over three years.  I was at over 200 pages of the first draft of one book when I saw it wasn’t heading where it needed to go, so I threw it in the trash.

HBR: What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?
Some days I’m just mulling over what comes next, just thinking where I need to go, but when I’m writing, I try to break at least 1,000 words a day, so I can see the progress.  My books usually come in at between 65,000 to 75,000 words, so when I’m in writing mode, I like to see the number jump—10,000, 11,000, 30,000, etc.…

HBR: What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I wrote some of my earlier books on merchant ships at sea, and I’ve written on beaches, in isolated oilfields, in funky little South American towns, in restaurants, on airplanes, in taxis…

HBR: What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your book?
I think that once the characters mature, they tell me their story.  Sometimes, I feel like I’m their stenographer.

HBR: How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
I’m working on my seventh, right now with two more fully fleshed out and waiting to be written.  They are like children. They are all unique.  You love them for the best of what they are, and you work to forgive them their shortcomings.

HBR: What do you want people to learn about your new book!
Adversity is building, and our attitudes in the tough times are what form us.  I also cannot help but know that there is a sentient and beneficent higher being that sustains us through our journey, otherwise, we wouldn’t have a chance.
