A tragic hero, a beautiful yet frightful heroine, an inspiring love story; all of these components make up what is a beautiful tale in Kidnapped in Jerusalem by author Beatrice Fairbank Cayzer. It starts out with a tone of misery and becomes a story full of suspense and intrigue, which inevitably leads readers to wonder if these two tortured souls will find love with one another once and forever. After all, everyone deserves a happy ending with the one they have fallen for.
As the novel starts, we meet Dennis McLeary. As a boy, he was sexually abused which changed him immensely. He was determined, though, to move past it and prove himself as the man he is when he was 18 years old. In doing so, though, he made a poor decision and had a romantic liaison with a 14-year-old girl who had come onto him. This led to Dennis’s arrest and subsequently, he was sent to prison where he experienced more heinous abuses at the hands of other inmates as well as the prison chaplain.
Fast forward to when Dennis is 35 and finally free from prison, he is determined to better his life and have a happy, normal marriage with a woman he loves. It is at this time that he meets and falls for Myriam, who is a half-Turkish half-Saudi Arabian Muslim woman. They soon elope, but what Myriam doesn’t tell Dennis is that she has a father who is easily angered just by someone showing adoration for his daughter. He is known to behead anyone who does such a thing. This is where the story takes a turn and the two must constantly be on the run and look out for her fanatical father and his thugs.
The two lovers face many horrendous obstacles in the name of their love but they will not give up on one another because of her father’s seriously deadly and vicious wishes. While this is a tale which has more mature and at times, chilling, themes that may not be for every audience, it is a wonderfully written book with a well-executed plot which will stay with readers long after the last page is read. The audience will be so firmly invested in the love story between Dennis and Myriam that they won’t be able to put the book down until they know if the duo has found their happily-ever-after in one another.
