Author Interview with Alister Mackinnon

Today we are talking to Alister Mackinnon, author of “Monster Mania: The Love Story of Dreams.”

HBR: Tell me a bit of yourself.
I was brought out by my grandmother in a rural part of Scotland left school at the age if 14 years old and went sea fishing.  At an early age I started drinking whiskey and for a period of time I was a normal go lucky guy.  By the age of 18 years old I was a hopeless alcoholic kept losing my jobs eventually I left for the big city, Aberdeen,  the oil rich capital of Europe. Worked offshore on the rigs made big spent then one night in a bar I had an spiritual experience that changed my life. I got married and home life was great. Then sadly my wife died and I was alone again. This time without my bottle.  I volunteered to go to Ukraine to work with street children and helped financially a doctor to build an orphanage.

Shortly afterwards, I went to the USA to work where I met my second wife.  I joined her at a Bible College for four years.  We returned to Scotland where I set up North Sea Garden mission to help those who suffered from alcohol abuse. A woman in Virginia had a dream writing a great book, it was not possible to this.  Twenty years on the book was written. Presently, Im preaching the Gospel of Christ to encourage the destitute like me.

HBR: What was the inspiration behind your book?
The godly woman who had a dream, I do believe God helped me without a shadow of a doubt inspired me to encourage others to follow my example.

HBR: What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?
The book shows very clearly what alcohol can do to the home.  The Christian grandmother who helped this family while she was alive was just like my grandmother to me.

HBR: What drew you into this particular genre?
That my addiction and sobriety could help others.

HBR: If you could sit down with any of the characters, what would you ask them?
The two children who suffered due to their parents drinking.

HBR: What was the inspiration for incorporating elements of fantasy snd mythology into narrative, and what particular myths and legends have been the biggest influence on you and your writing?
Bringing the Lochness Monster into the book would always turn heads to browse through the book.

HBR: What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?
Don’t expect your book to be a best selling overnight.

HBR: What does the future hold in store you?
Maybe an autobiography.
