God is everywhere, watching over all of His children as we have access to Him whenever we need Him. Many may want to be selective of God’s children when everything God created is considered a part of Him. Humans and animals don’t share the same purpose of creation, but that doesn’t mean treating each other without proper love and care. We should understand that everyone and everything has a purpose in life. Some were given instructions immediately upon creation, while others are still trying to find their way. Having an open mind to greater possibilities leaves no room for lack of knowledge since life experiences are what we’re entitled to have.
In Henry’s Mysterious Voice, author Nancy L. Hurley introduced her readers to an adorable little brown mouse named Henry, who is self-proclaimed cute, and cuddly. The reader will experience life from this mouse’s perspective of living in the Wilsons’ family home, who has no knowledge that Henry is there. He has done a phenomenal job at remaining hidden yet feels he is a part of the family. Henry’s favorite time of his day is dinner while the Wilsons are gathered around their family table, sharing their experiences of the day. It demonstrates just how solid the family’s foundation is because not too many shares something as precious as dinner every night. It’s something we may consider going forward in our lives and seeking personal connections again. There is a voice which spoke to Henry, startling him into thinking it could be another mouse within the home. This voice was not from another mouse but of an invisible being. Now, a first thought anyone would assume this voice could be an imaginary friend, but as you continue reading, you’ll find out more about the voice and the special connection it has with Henry.
What was cute about this story was Henry doesn’t know much about the world beyond the confining walls of Wilson’s family home. Venturing out into the outside world seemed daunting, but curiosity got the best of him. Not only that, since he loved hearing the family’s stories at dinner every night, he had sparked the idea of going on a mini-adventure so he could also have tales to tell. Needless to say, when the opportunity struck, he went for it. Venturing out into the outside world sounds exciting for someone who hasn’t been. It makes you wonder if it was worth stepping out of your comfort zone knowing that you are safe. Henry is no exception to this rule. He took a step outside and took the chance to see what he could find or encounter. Let us say things were exciting but also overwhelming and scary. The voice didn’t hesitate to step into action on a needed basis, very thoughtful because it feels good knowing someone has your back.
During Henry’s exploration outside, he saw the world for what it was, a place to create the life you want to enjoy. We must understand not all experiences are going to be good. Some of the bad experiences we have only assist in molding us to be stronger and more resilient. To watch as Henry nearly encountered an unusual creature will make you more cautious and on high alert of your surroundings. The level of bravery Henry had demonstrated that he would be ok, regardless. He has the voice as his guiding light, as no harm would come to him. The story shows that our hearts and minds have this inner voice to guide, encourage, and protect us from anything harmful.
It was an enjoyable reading experience in understanding the life of a mouse, which has taught me to view and think kindly of them. I had no idea the struggles they would face being so small in the world amongst large creatures. Reading this book has granted me an opportunity to gain more respect for the lives of various animals and creatures, especially those many fear, like mice. What stood out to me most was the reveal of the mysterious voice and how refreshing it was to know.
The story teaches us to remember as we walk through life, God is always there for us. There will be days of uncertainty and the unknown because our faith is what grounds us and keeps us safe. The author is showcasing to children of a young age what a healthy relationship with your creator looks like showing in a perfectly written way. It made me feel a bit more comfortable and understanding towards mice, interestingly enough. I highly recommend parents and teachers to read this book to their children as it teaches a beautiful lesson on how important every life is. The children will also understand that God loves and protects His children, no matter how adventurous they want to be.
