At one point in all of our lives, we as a civilization have had to face change in one form or another. Whether it is a small, personal change in our daily lives, or the change which comes from the evolution of our society as a whole, change comes for us all, and it is up to us whether or not we are the instruments of our own change – or not. As Barack Obama once said, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”
In author Scott Miller’s Chance of Precipitation, the author explores the concept of change through two friends. When Randy, someone who spent over two decades as a college coach, decides he is ready for a change in his life, he decides to take a chance and work with his friend Adam, working at a car dealership. However, the lack of support from his family and friends comes as a shock to Randy, as does the sudden tide of misfortune that befalls Adam and sweeps them both up in its wake. After Adam is arrested for fraud and he is unable to save the dealership, Randy must examine his life and find a way not only to recover what he has lost, but to regain his family as well.
The author does an incredible job of exploring the good and the bad which can come from great change. The emotional whirlwind the reader experiences in this book is both overwhelming and engaging all at once, highlighting the slow decline a husband and father takes when the opportunity for a change takes him down a turbulent road of hardship and loss. An impactful story like this does well when it fully explores the complexities of personal relationships and how an examination of the self vs. how one’s actions impact others can greatly change a person, and this novel does just that.
This was the perfect read for those who enjoy literary dramas that explore family drama and personal development within the protagonist. The way the author balances out the almost cinematic quality to the character development and the narrative was incredible to see unfold, and the emotional beats that helped elevate the stakes that the protagonist faced in his tumultuous journey gave the readers the hook needed to keep them invested in Randy’s story.
A heartbreaking, emotional, and engaging drama, author Scott Miller’s Chance of Precipitation is a must-read novel. The impact of financial hardships and great change at critical moments in a family’s lifespan are expertly explored in this narrative, and the incredible character development and realism the author highlighted in this story really made the novel come alive in the narrative.
