Hollywood Book Reviews

In The Favor by Marche’ Scott, readers are introduced to Chanel, an intelligent, nineteen-year-old girl studying Biochemistry in her senior year in college. Chanel is a successful entrepreneur and at her age, manages to live on her own while juggling between school and her business.

Her life is looking up but an encounter with her neighbor Trey, a 35-year-old bachelor, thrusts the young teenager into a labyrinth of dangerous passions which threaten to upend her life. Young Chanel sees no way out of the manipulative web which Trey sets her in until one day she has a divine encounter with Jesus. Consequently, she begins her walk with God as she deals with the trauma of her troubled past, which leads to her absolute freedom.

I absolutely enjoyed reading this book. Sensual and voyeuristic in all the right ways, Scott presents us with a flawed protagonist who experiences God’s healing, forgiveness, and redemption. The prose is remarkable and the deftness of the author in writing this narrative made reading this book a rewarding experience.

Among its many strengths, this novel boasts deep-seated and relevant themes that will appeal to many readers. The plot is highly believable, an aspect which displays the author’s natural talent. It is one of those texts which will make one disappear into a world of make-believe. I loved how the author did not shy away from using a work of fiction to explore weighty topics such as rape.

Further, the yarn is a wonderfully written piece that is replete and solid and reminded me of God’s love for humankind. The element of despair and frustration by Chanel regarding her situation was well-executed as she turns to Christ to rescue her from the situation. Being that the book has mature content, I would recommend it to a mature audience.

The Favor by Marche’ Scott is an indisputable gem that carries you along on a relentless pace.  I greatly recommend it.
