Fresh Cheese by author Troy Cheese is an intimate, all-encompassing assemblage of poems which cover a myriad of topics in ordinary life based on the author’s true-life events.
The heartfelt poems are unflinchingly honest, raw, and candid, as the author leaves no stone unturned while describing situations in his life that led him to hit rock bottom. Cheese deals with issues such as drugs, death, deception, betrayal, police brutality, love, and friendship, among other themes. He does not stop there but offers practical advice and solutions to some of these issues.
Some poems are filled with hope such as “You Gave Me These Feelings” and “This is How We Make Love Last Forever,” while others are heart-wrenching and dig deep into the harrowing and damaging effects of grief and betrayal. A variety of poems touch on faith and true Christianity and blends this with scriptural verses to accentuate the points he endeavors to pass across. He further offers a refreshing daily dip into God’s purpose, plan, and enduring love for His children. Constant in all his poems, Cheese hangs on to the hope of a better world and future.
The entries provide important insights into the moral dimensions of our surroundings while also offering profound perspectives on different aspects of life. The result is a nuanced read that presents readers with a deeply personal and ethically penetrating reading experience. The author’s fresh and vibrant voice reverberates across the collection. His thoughts ascent and blast with overwhelming rigor. In some entries, hope, joy, and desire, dominate culminating in a captivating catharsis. Whether it is the sonnets, free verse, or poetic memoirs present in this anthology, readers will inevitably unearth a poem that speaks directly to their souls. I particularly found appealing the way the author encapsulates emotions through words.
I had a hard time picking my favorite poem in this collection as they all are so profound and reflective. The poems demand to be read out loud on account of the intricate enjambment of patterns and rhythms in them. Also, the alliteration present in some of the poems injects focus and harmony and grabs a reader’s attention. Indeed, Troy Cheese is one of the contemporary poets to look out for in this era!
