Something that often gets people thinking about the course of things and how the journey they’ve been on can change at a moment’s notice is the intricate details of their life in general. Rarely do things go according to our plans for our lives, and yet the reality is despite how different we all are and how much we should celebrate our individuality, we also must recognize that many events in our lives connect us together and make us similar in a lot of ways. As E.M. Forster once said, “We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.”
In author Marcia Bundalian Stephen’s Are You Wearing My Other Shoe? the author takes readers on a personal journey into the experiences which have comprised her life. From the hardships and struggles of a failed early marriage and the realities of being a single parent, to the painful experiences watching someone you love struggle with serious health conditions, and even the pitfalls and struggles to find the best relationship possible, the author delves into a wide array of experiences and events that all relate to the author’s personal connection and belief in God and Christianity as a whole.
The author did a wonderful job of crafting a memoir that felt both personal and yet educational. The pacing was fast, and yet the author managed to bring a lot of memories and experiences into the short narrative that made the author’s story come to life on the pages. The author’s use of photographs did a great job of making me feel connected to the author’s life, and kept me invested in the story overall. The emotional pull of the author’s story was so strongly felt thanks to the author’s brilliant use of imagery and tone in the book, creating an intimate and personal experience between the author’s life and the reader.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy non-fiction reads, especially those who enjoy biographies, memoirs, and autobiographies. What really struck me as something special with this book was the multi-cultural experience the author brought to the personal stories of her life. The author related her heritage as Chinese, Armenian, and Spanish, and through those backgrounds, and the era in which the author grew up, the personal experiences which the author shared felt so unique to the author’s life, and yet had notes of understanding and familiarity other readers will be able to identify with.
Thoughtful, honest, and engaging, author Marcia Bundalian Stephen’s Are You Wearing My Other Shoe?, is a must-read memoir and biography book. The heart and passion for which the author relates these stories and the inspirational way in which the author overcame these hardships and struggles will greatly relate with the readers, and the personal way in which the author wrote made for a strong and heartfelt reading experience.
