If there is one force in all the world which has been proven powerful enough to start wars and yet simultaneously save lives is that of love. Love is a powerful emotion, and can be shared with friends, relatives, siblings, parents, and of course between soulmates. No matter what walk of life a person comes from, love can overwhelm us all and lead us down the path which we have always meant to be. Through all of life’s trials and tribulations, love has been the binding force that keeps couples fighting to save their relationship – time and time again.
In author Carol Scutt’s Lost Without Him, the author shares the personal story of her marriage to lifelong partner and husband Paul. Having met in the summer of 1967, the then teenagers Paul and Carol met in Columbia City, Indiana. Working together at their local grocery store, the two’s powerful love story would transcend a high-school romance, turning into a lifelong marriage that would see both incredible highs and painful lows. From being drafted into the Vietnam War and sharing a love of faith, to nearly facing the end of their marriage and developing a lifelong career, both Paul and Carol share their love story with readers everywhere.
The author did such an exceptional job of pouring their heart and soul into this personal and memorable memoir. The emotions and honesty in which the author brought the memories and experiences of her and her husband’s life together was inspiring to read. The balance that was struck between the themes of faith, romance, and resilience in the face of adversity was great to see, as all three themes often can overlap with one another, and the author was able to show how they gave each theme its own time to shine.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy non-fiction reads, especially those who enjoy biographies and memoirs that include themes of faith and relationships. As someone who enjoys memoirs, I found the authors words to be so impactful and each chapter of the authors book and life overall had me hooked. The imagery in the authors writing really brought these events to life so perfectly. Even the way the author was able to delve into very personal territory like their upbringing really will resonate with a wide audience out there.
Thoughtful, honest, and engaging, author Carol Scutt’s “Lost Without Him” is a must-read memoir and biography book. The inspiring way the author writes and the emotions behind their life together really draws the reader further and further into their narrative. The truthful way the author frames the love story and relationship between her and Paul was great to see, especially how they didn’t shy away from the trials and tribulations in their relationship they faced together.
