No matter what a person’s personal religious preference or belief system is, there is always one question amongst the faithful: how can they “get right with God”, or in other terms, get your spiritual self on a more faithful level which aligns with your particular belief system. While everyone has a different way of looking at this question depending on what God or gods they believe in, for many Christians, the question of their relationship with God is both personal and integral to their way of life.
In author Joseph C. Way, B.A., B.D., and MDIV’s Getting Right with God, the author explores the question of “getting right with God” from a Christian perspective. First the author explores the concepts of gods versus God in general, and how these plays into the Christian belief system. Then the author moves into the story of Jesus and how his practice of love through God becomes the blueprint for how Christians should live life, especially in the confusion and different answers given to this question since his crucifixion. The book also explores the followers of Jesus, how they moved on in the wake of his death, and how their interpretations of his messages impacted how they answered these questions as well.
The author did a wonderful job of researching and diving into the history, culture, and faith of this book’s content. One thing the book did immediately, which was great to see unfold, was the exploration of what the “truth” means in the context of religion. The detail and personal experiences the author relayed to this subject showcased the continuous trend of balancing historical and religious context with personal anecdotes and experiences in the author’s own life, and made this a book readers will feel more connected to. The amount of research the author puts into this book is evident throughout the entirety of the book, and readers will appreciate the due diligence the author did exploring how other cultures and belief systems and their deities are defined and relate to the subject in relation to Christianity.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy religious-based books, especially those that focus on spirituality and the personal relationships with God which we each have; and those who enjoy culture and historical reads as well. The detail and human connection found in the author’s writing style made this book flow smoothly, and will keep readers invested in the author’s studies and experiences as the subject is explored in full.
Insightful, faithful, and engaging, author Joseph C. Way’s Getting Right with God is an incredible reading experience for those who enjoy religious-based texts and explorations of the Christian faith overall. The examination of one’s connection to God and the spiritual plain will have readers gain new insight into the message and theme of this book, and the knowledge gained by religious readers will have them eager to read more of this author’s work.
