One of the hardest lessons a person can learn in life is that sometimes, changing our perspective on things or being open to taking something we thought we knew, and looking at it with a new interpretation. It can be a rewarding and life-changing experience. The idea at some point we stop learning new things or become such grand experts on a subject that no other person could possibly look at what you see as anything other than what you declare it to be is the moment we, as a people, stop growing; and the need to open ourselves up to new ways of looking at things in life is an important part of our growth both as a society and as individuals. One area this needs to happen more than any other is faith, and how religious texts in particular can apply to our modern world.
In author Joseph C. Way’s Could It Be?: Biblical Gems from the Garbage Dump, the author explores old Bible passages and forces the reader to reexamine them through a new light. These passages have been tossed aside by both non-believers and those claiming to be the one and only “true believers” of their faith, and yet these words, as shown by the author, hold more meaning and purpose than they could ever have thought. Through the practice of stirring the status quo, the author hopes to take these “old ideas” found within these passages and explore new possibilities in order to get closer to knowing God.
The author does a remarkable job of crafting a relatable and personable reading experience. The usage of often dismissed Bible quotes and passages to take on new ideas and modern ways of thinking is a unique direction to take the book, and delivered on that promise wholeheartedly. The attention to detail and thoughtful way the author approached these passages with an inquisitive mind allows room for the readers to come to similar conclusions on their own accord, giving this book a more interactive feel to the subject matter.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy non-fiction books, especially those who enjoy books on religion & spirituality, most notably Christianity, and who seek knowledge about their faith which they might not otherwise be aware of. The author’s ability to relate their own belief system to ideas and concepts for which these passages deals with was remarkable to read about. The idea, for instance, that we may as a group of people throw away our convictions or beliefs for little to no gain in our world forces us to look at things a bit differently and more critically, as shown through Genesis 25: 21-34.
Thoughtful, balanced, and engaging, author Joseph C. Way’s Could It Be?: Biblical Gems from the Garbage Dump is a must-read non-fiction book on religion and spirituality. The thought-provoking questions this book forces the readers to examine, and the concept of approaching life and the questions it brings from new perspectives, will resonate with readers on a grand scale. The heart and passion for which the author writes also bleeds through into the author’s writing in a very natural way, and highlights the personal approach to mindful teachings and belief systems which the author shares.
