Martin is like any young man; he likes rock and roll and pretty girls.  The only difference is that he is sent away to a mental asylum after he attacks someone on the street.  While on the ward he learns to live with himself and others, even goes as far as makes new friends such as Gus and Sally Anne.  But while he is learning to handle his own mind, he remains haunted by his vices and the “shiny silver bullets” and his crush on Mary threaten to break him down more.

Marcus Aurelio creates a novel that is a phenomenal depiction of the mini-society/culture that forms within not just a mental asylum but any grouping of people.  Readers see Martin being aware of his mentality and strive to improve on himself, while struggling with his own demons.  Readers get a character that is both detached yet invested in their daily surroundings, showing that internal struggle. While throughout the novel, the dialogue seems to be erratic and unrealistic it emphasizes the insanity within Martin that author Aurelio skillfully creates.

Marcus Aurelio delivers on giving his readers a novel that is entertaining, emotional, and zany all rolled into one edge of seat story.  Readers will not know what to expect next and will keep coming back for more.  He pulls the reader in from the very first sentence and captivates them throughout the rest of the story. Aurelio weaves a tale that while the reader knows is fiction, there are elements that make it seem so real it gives chills.  The author has the skillset to get into his character’s mind, and bringing it to life for his readers, and makes them feel and think the things Martin does.

The Chambermaid is one of those books that sit with you after you have finished read it; it just lingers in the reader’s mind.  It is a novel that makes readers hunger for more from Marcus Aurelio, making one hope he writes more. This is the perfect book for someone who wants something a little extra, something that breaks outside of the norm.
