“Some things are here to stay, while other things are just passing through. This little tree is here to stay.”-Just Passing Through.
Just Passing Through is a robust time machine filled with engrossing minutiae and an embodiment of Southern grace and charm set in the early 90s. Based on real-life people and events, the book follows the Wards, a humble and devoted family who moved from one cotton field to another with their wagon.
They moved to Pope County, approximately two miles from the small town of Dover, Ark 1926, as tenant farmers. Their lives took a surprising turn when they encounter Mrs. Cartwright, whose cruel husband had deserted his family duties for an extended trip. The family makes up their mind on cushioning and aiding the family, measures that are not taken too kindly by Mr. Cartwright. Sorrows and wounds are healed only when we touch them with compassion as is depicted in this story where humanity and kindness transcend above callousness and indifference.
Just Passing Through is a literary oeuvre which lets you travel through time without moving your feet and upon finishing the last page, feels more like you have lost a friend. Author Margaret Tutor manages to bring her characters alive through stirring dialogue that aptly showcases the characters’ emotions, quirks, and temperaments. She adds Southern essence to her story by incorporating sizeable amounts of Southern slang and fine-drawn disposition, creating a plausible and affecting narrative worth poring over.
The author deftly manages to immerse us in another period. This book handles multiple characters and intertwines them into one virtuosic plot, is a win-win by itself as it gives it a greater depth and achieves a multilayered tale. Historical fiction fans will find Margaret Tutor’s work to be resonating and empowering as well. Just Passing Through is assuredly an ode that is bound to evoke heartfelt memories from a time gone by.
