When it comes to crimes, so many people believe it is the vices and tourism of big cities which attract criminals to partake in the violent crimes that rock each and every nation. The glamour and high-profile nature of these cities are often the attention grabbers for those looking to blame big city life for the rampant increase in crime. Yet rarely does life ever become that simple. Small towns are not without their own crime, and in such a small and integrated community, the secrets and lies the few people making up these towns hold over one another often can lead to the deadliest of surprises.
That is what drives the narrative forward in author Melton Luttrell’s Who Drew The Two? The story follows a small West Texas town known as Burson, where a shocking murder puts the entire community into an uproar. The local police chief must consult and work with a Texas sheriff in order to piece together the mystery behind this murder. In the process five of the area’s most prominent businessmen find themselves pulled into the shocking secrets and lies which this murder reveals. With everything from weddings and divorces leaving a trail of suspicion, to West Texas high school football and strange fishing trips all contributing to the case, the revelation of the killer and their motives will leave readers shocked.
The author did an incredible job of bringing authenticity and imagery to the narrative through his writing, allowing his life experiences to bleed into the story to make the setting and atmosphere these characters found themselves in to feel real and believable to the reader. The tension the author builds slowly through this book begins immediately, as the tense meeting between these five business leaders in the town form the bedrock of this mystery, showcasing how wealth, greed, power, and even family can all hold a powerful link to the darkest secrets a town can keep buried.
This is the perfect read for anyone who enjoys a good murder mystery, especially those which infuse elements of suspense and thriller storytelling, and bring to life rich small-town elements into the narrative. The heart of the story was in the rich character developments the story produced, from the investigators looking into this crime to the shady business dealings behind closed doors that these leaders held and the everyday townspeople who found themselves connected to the mystery one way or another.
Thought-provoking, chilling, and entertaining, author Melton Luttrell’s Who Drew The Two? is a must-read suspense thriller that readers won’t be able to put down. The twists and turns in the narrative, and the shocking final chapters which illustrate the killer’s connection to the victim and their strong motives, will have readers enthralled with the author’s story and lost in this small-town’s shady history.
