Full Moon Survivor is a moving anthology of poems penned by poet Andrea Fahselt that employ an artful cadence of morphemes, unequivocally serving readers with more than just escapist entertainment.

The entries, vivid and rich, cultivate visual imagination through their evocative wordplay as they explore various universal themes such as love, loss, loneliness, hope, pain, and many more. The text further explores the hopelessness which followed the onset of the pandemic, and the resilience of the human spirit to survive this outbreak in the previous years.  Raw human emotion permeates these vignettes as the poet’s voice transcends throughout adding life and reality to them. The speaker invokes feelings of empathy, sadness, surprise, anticipation, happiness, and even idealism, through the adept musicality present in every poem.

The pieces include pensive soliloquies such as “Standing too close to the edge, I’m bored. I’m restless, What if I reach my arms out and try to fly, built on doubt layers of hurt, I’ll try to do better, See clearer, My proposal, To dig beneath the surface, Regain my purpose”. Elsewhere, introspective musings on fractured and healthy relationships reign and in other parts, the persona seems to be experiencing profound emotional release. Ultimately, Fahselt succeeds in leaving her audience purged by the end of the reading.

A good poetry book, in my opinion, should have entries which relate to one another, with the ability to follow the evolution of the subjects discussed from the onset. This text accomplishes this and much more with these short pieces, even as some appear as free verses and in prose form. The poems are untitled yet find their shape in their telling, a clear indication of the author’s mastery of her work.

The use of figurative language such as metaphors and symbolism in the poems creates rich descriptions and depth, an aspect I found to be appreciable. Full Moon Survivor by Andrea Fahselt is a thoughtful poetry book that breathes new life into familiar subjects, and one which fans of poetry will indeed enjoy.  This collection is highly recommended for poetry enthusiasts and anyone seeking inspiration and solace through the written word.

In Full Moon Survivor readers will find not only a celebration of human endurance but also a source of comfort and hope. It is a reminder that, no matter the challenges we face, the human spirit has an extraordinary capacity to rise, rebuild, and shine.
