In the grand scheme of life, one of the most difficult questions a person can ask of themselves is – what is their true identity? For in that same vein, questions arise as to what identity itself truly is. Is the question aimed at discovering the identity the world has come to know a person by? Perhaps that identity is the one forced upon a person, making their life not quite their own. However, there comes a moment in every person’s life where they must answer for themselves who they truly are.
This question becomes the backbone of the protagonist’s journey in author Barkev Khatchadourian’s Love, Rage and Deception. The story follows Charles, as he goes through life experiencing a multitude of setbacks and shocking revelations. Exploring Charles’s chaotic and shocking childhood and following the young man into adulthood, the novel delves into the relationships which define his life; from lost love to questionable parents and more. Yet when a close bond brings him into trouble with the law as a murder mystery unfolds, it’ll be up to Charles to find those responsible for the heinous crime.
The author does a spectacular job of character development in this narrative. The story is split into two halves, one exploring the childhood of Charles and the family he grew up with, and the life he led as an adult, and the relationships he forged along the way. The theme of identity plays well in this story, giving readers an insight into the mind of Charles as he is confronted with questions about his true parentage, who he is, and how he will come to be known by. The air of mystery and drama is felt in every chapter, as Charles develops relationships with his best friend and sister, discovers haunting secrets of his own life, and must determine what he truly wants out of life. The details and compelling narrative are infused with captivating imagery in the author’s writing style that is transportive in nature.
The author’s story here is an integral and thoughtful narrative, perfect for those who enjoy fiction and drama, especially drama which infuses elements of romance, mystery and historical fiction into the main story. The even pacing of the story and the rich dynamics between the protagonist and the cast of characters he meets along the way. This will instantly draw readers into the story of Charles, and the emotional wellspring that readers are drawn to as they learn more and more of the protagonist’s backstory. Readers will remain invested and intrigued as they are suddenly thrown into an emotionally driven murder mystery that will define Charles’s life forever.
