A truly powerful and understood idea surrounding relationships is that any relationship, good or bad, is truly complicated. No matter what the nature of these relationships are, from friends and family to romance, with every good and positive experience that comes with those relationships, there are pitfalls or stumbles which make that relationship difficult to navigate, and it is only through hard work and communication two people can work through those relationships to find more solid ground. Oftentimes issues can arise from mis-communication, or a series of lies that begin to crumble the foundation of which these relationships stem.

The complexity of these relationships becomes the bedrock of author Cecile Labar’s Amazing Caring Women. The book is written in the style of a script, following the lives of three women and their relationships. The protagonist, Misty, finds herself questioning her relationship with Victor, the head of a magazine, whom Misty suspects may be cheating on her. Meanwhile, Teresa fears her reputation may be in danger when someone informs her that Fez was seen editing some adult entertainment, forcing her to use his faith to restore their relationship. Finally, Elena contends with a long-held secret regarding her son’s conception with Yank, causing tension and conflict to boil over into their relationship.

Tension and realism play a pivotal role in the lives of these three characters, and the overall narrative that develops. The honesty and complex character development the narrative takes on shines through in the author’s writing style, with descriptive imagery bringing each scene and exchange of dialogue to life in a way readers can envision a play being put on stage in their mind’s eye. The emotional connection readers will make with these characters and the use of different cultures and backgrounds through this cast kept the pacing and overall engagement between readers and these characters at an all-time high.

For any reader who truly enjoys fictional stories, especially those which blend romance, drama, realism, and folding them into the style of a scripted play, this book is the perfect choice. The honest depiction of relationships and the way the author embraces the differences in culture and thought-process for each of these characters is very well done. Misty, in particular and her relationship with Victor stood out, with later events proving that not everything is as it appears, and their story being the perfect way to illustrate the importance of communication and honesty, as without all of the information at hand, the truth can often allude to a person.
