Immigration!: A Tale of Political Intrigue is an informative book, and an enjoyable read, especially if you want to be well-versed with global happenings, and particularly the politics in the United Kingdom, and Europe at large. Author Keith Salmon wrote a book that can be described as intriguing, and refreshing, but also one to ruffle some feathers. Despite using fictional characters, the message in Immigration!: A Tale of Political Intrigue is clear as day, and relatable to the average UK citizen following the news and recent trends. Immigration is a topic that starts endless debates whenever the matter is introduced. The question is, however, is everyone who engages in the discourse familiar with the nitty gritty of immigration, the plight of legal migrants, the impact of illegal migrants, and how different populations worldwide are affected?
We follow the story of James Greene, the new Home Office Minister, and his quest to bring the much-needed change in this government department that deals with immigrants of all nature. James is a promising young man. He is 32 years old, ambitious, and a go-getter. As he navigates his day-to-day duties, James realizes that bringing change may be an uphill task. The minister’s schedule is packed almost every day. He is a prominent figure in the government, making him rub shoulders with many parties. What I like about James, however, is that he is hellbent on whatever he has put his eyes on. Young as he was, he appeared to make things work, even surprising the skeptics. James Greene is my favorite character in the book.
Through characters like Minister James Greene, Sir Joseph Malthouse, Sir Robert Pennington, David Lingham, and the various ambassadors, we learn how prolonged some legal process can be, and why diplomacy is crucial especially when dealing with foreign governments. I truly enjoyed the many scenarios presented in the book. They include working with legal migrants and expats, the role of media in spreading information, how illegal immigrants falsify their nationalities to seek asylum, laws which govern immigration and the intricate but mesmerizing legal world, politics, and how draining it can be to deal with a certain caliber of politicians. While reading, I asked myself, do we have any honest politicians?
Immigration!: A Tale of Political Intrigue is a superb read and everyone who gets a hold of this book will love every chapter. I appreciate the insights Keith Salmon gave, but I also have to note that the strong language in some texts should have perhaps been moderate. Overall, the writing was impeccable, and the author had brilliant characters. I also appreciate the brevity of the paragraphs and the book in general. One can digest the stories, and learn about different issues in just a few words. Once you have completed the book, you understand the real meaning of the phrase ‘immigration is complex’.
