Set in Marshfield, Massachusetts, author Melisa Calcote’s Angels Unaware is an uplifting faith-based story which explores the existence of angels through the response of Captain Lewis’ family to a tragic, faith-testing event.

Captain Robert Lewis has been tuna fishing on his own trawler fishing boat, “Whistler,” for the last fifteen years. Since he treats his staff members like family, he has made it a habit to inquire about their well-being while they are working with him. In the story, Sean, one of his younger crew members, is seen sliding overboard while repairing a loose pole on the boat. Scuba diver Tommy jumps in to save him from the crashing waves, but he is shocked to find Sean quickly coming back to the surface of the rocky waters by himself just after Tommy senses a swishing beside him.

Sean is shown again later in the novel receiving the surprising news that his wife is in labor, which he feels is way too soon. To the amazement of the family, she gives birth to triplets instead of the one child they had anticipated. However, Sandy, the third child, must be kept in the hospital for closer monitoring because she weighs less and cannot breathe on her own. While the family chooses to focus on overcoming what they view as the greatest test of their faith, a stranger is shown to be observing them as they pray with others in the hope that her health will improve.

This work makes extensive mention of a topic which is frequently discussed: the existence of angels. It contains scriptural proof and information readers may use to evaluate the inquiry themselves. Through a sequence of seemingly unfortunate incidents and a plethora of confusing situations, the novel uses mystery and suspense to conceal obvious solutions in the most unexpected way.

It also provides the reader with pointers on how to understand God’s voice. It has done an excellent job of addressing the value of prayer in the most basic manner possible and illustrates how faith can help one overcome any problem. Readers will appreciate that the main characters are accompanied by ‘strange’ ones, each of whom has a very emotional and uplifting purpose. They will also recognize the importance of moral support and deep familial affection, which underpin the plot twist.

Compared to numerous Christian fiction works in its genre, Melisa Calcote’s Angels Unaware is more distinctively written and gives more. It successfully argues for its purpose and piques interest in learning more. I highly recommend it to Christian readers and everyone curious about the supernatural operations of the Divine.
