TV celebrity Bill Rancic once said, “Keep your word. Honor commitments, and they will double back to honor you.” In author Larry Auerbach’s latest historical fiction narrative, a lone man’s painful experience during the end of the Civil War leads him on a mission to find a doctor who saved his life, yet left his cousin to die, leading to a complex journey of turmoil, violence and honor.
In this novel, the author tells the story of a former soldier turned bounty hunter in a post-Civil War era of history. Jonah is a feared man, as authorities in every town fear the trouble he’ll bring and criminals fear the secrets they have hidden for so long will come to light. However Jonah finds himself on a mission of his own, hunting down a doctor who left his cousin to die in the midst of a shootout, yet saved his life in that very same shootout. He can’t help but be pulled into the troubles of the town he finds himself in, feeling a call to help despite his better instincts, and painting a target on his back in the process.
The author has done an amazing job of bringing the Old West and post-Civil War language and history to life in this novel. The narrative of a bounty hunter on a mission is both classic and refreshing in this story, as readers are taken into the lawlessness that often took over in that era of the United States’ history. The author even manages to incorporate a couple of high profile historical figures into the story, bringing a feeling of authenticity and realness to the narrative that you rarely feel in an Old West era tale.
This is definitely a book meant for readers who enjoy history, historical fiction, the Old West and high-octane action in a post-Civil War setting. As a fan of history and the Old West in particular, this story spoke to me as a reader. The inclusion of historical figures and events brought a grounded feeling to the story, and the combination of action, mystery and character development made for a well-rounded and inviting read.
This is a must read historical fiction thriller. A fabulous adventure through the lawlessness of the Old West, the author does a fantastic job of drawing the reader in with the heavy historical narrative he has created. Despite being over 700 pages, the story flowed smoothly as it honed in greatly on individual character growth and had readers invested in so many different characters’ stories throughout the entire novel.
