How strong are the forces of fate which operate throughout one’s existence? Can love co-exist and thrive through the interminable fog of war? Isabella “Izzy” Armand was conceived in a combat zone. Her parents, Joe and Luci, met on the eve of war and sealed their love during the harshest of conditions. Her given name stems from a woman who was a warrior on Earth, but lingers as a spiritual presence long past her untimely death. The US involvement in Vietnam has been ongoing for a few years, and Izzy wants to lend a hand. Izzy wants to join a Red Cross unit and help comfort the battered men who are serving in the distant land. Luci is not a proponent of the idea, but almost feels as if Izzy was predestined to go overseas.

Izzy is a smart young woman possessing compassion for the combat bound soldier. She offers a kind word and open ears to a homebound soldier at the airport, and soon makes the acquaintance of a Vietnam bound young-man on their plane. The young man’s name is Abe Chastain; he is ready to lead soldiers into the fray. Izzy disarms Abe with her smile and her perspective. Their long flight together cements a possible courtship, yet they are both on different paths. They make plans for an assignation once the craziness of war has subsided.

Abe’s baptism by fire consists of enemy ambushes and the loss of many men in his company. The constant bombardment and the grisly carnage takes a toll on Abe’s mental state. Meanwhile, Izzy has requested to be stationed closer to the combat zone, as she feels she and her fellow women can provide a greater boost to the men. She desires to be closer to Abe, but the deteriorating situation has Abe’s company being deployed to different sites on a daily basis. Izzy holds out hope to see Abe, but Abe is losing the memory of Izzy due to the constant refrain of artillery and screams of injury. Will they meet again or will conflict separate them forever?

Almost Eden is the impressive finale to the Eden Trilogy by author Richard Taylor. The themes of love and war resound throughout the entire trilogy, yet are palpable in the culmination of this fine work. Izzy is a strong protagonist following in the footsteps trod by her predecessors. Her belief in the power of Isabella’s spirit indicates her own strong faith which she showcases in her patience with Abe and the separation caused by the war. This book will appeal to Historical-Fiction buffs, but also those who like a book with heart as well. Almost Eden is indeed pleasurable reading experience.
