AMISS is a stunning work of fiction penned by L.L. McCall paints the expository depiction of family dynamics, sibling jealousy, and marital struggles through the lives of twin brothers, Paul and Peter. Carla’s dream comes true a few days before her high school graduation when Paul, the man she sets her eyes upon at a local diner, later proposes to her and marries her in a beautiful wedding. Both had successful careers, with Paul becoming a full-fledged stockbroker and Carla setting up a brick-and-mortar store downtown, gradually building a nice clientele base.
Marriage life seemed quite promising for the two, but beneath the layers of their fairy tale love, fragments of disconnection began to rear their ugly heads threatening to shatter the marriage apart. Paul, whose father had great business acumen, followed in his dad’s footsteps, attaining a great work ethic over the years. His twin brother, Peter, however, was his complete opposite, and a slacker who often avoided work or any effort, envying his brother’s success from a distance. When Peter shows up at Carla’s and Paul’s house one day, it sets in motion a complex chain of events that evoke doubts and questions among those involved exploring the powerful bond between twins that can sometimes turn destructive with far-reaching consequences.
Watching Peter’s scheme unfold in the comfort of his twin brother’s home will have readers taken aback at the lengths he will go to take away what he feels astonishingly entitled to, will keep them so engaged that they will inhale this short but compelling read in one sitting as I did. The characters are plausible and very well-developed, and they felt like next-door neighbors that one watched grow. McCall’s writing captivates and offers subtle lessons, fresh wisdom and reinforces treasured ideals. The text teases its audience with the question: What will happen next? – a worthy prerequisite in creating well-rendered tension throughout.
L.L. McCall’s AMISS encompasses an original tale written with style and aplomb. That it is short and hones its purpose on the characters’ actions and emotions makes it consumable providing a much deeper impact and a suitable magnet for contemporary fiction fans. AMISS is a powerful, thought-provoking novel that delves into the intricacies of human relationships and the consequences of buried truths. McCall’s work does not disappoint and I look forward to reading his next offering, “Amiss 2.”
