In Biblical Cures for the Wounded Spirit: Answers for PTSD and Healing the Invisible Wound, author Wayne A. Keast captures various instances where human resilience is demonstrated, especially amongst war soldiers. No one wants to face the battle of taking another person’s life, even if due to self-defense, as it leaves an eternal imprint on one’s heart and mind.

The intervention of religious beliefs, specifically the belief in God, creates a comforting cushion for everyone to fall back on when life gets tough. Through faith, anyone has the advantage of experiencing life in a brighter light. Our medical treatments are more advanced, and we can assist and treat soldiers on the field, saving more lives than before. Unfortunately, it comes at the cost of a lost limb or traumatic scenes replaying in their minds. Soldiers are left coping with a wounded spirit from the advancement to spare their lives during the war. As a society, we must remember just how important the mind is, especially when it comes to the defense of our country. We experience an economic strain as the annual cost to treat mental health is around $42 billion. Instead of discovering solutions to the root of the issues, much time, energy, and money have been utilized for treatment to assist many who are facing mental issues year after year.

A wonder that constantly floats to the surface of one’s mind is understanding even psychologists could experience mental health issues and must also seek therapy. There is a greater force going beyond the advancement of guidance, and most are either unaware of the tremendous value it offers or prefer an alternative route. Drifting further away from the innate lessons of God, alongside religion, could help people in their darkest hours, even if they feel doubtful. We must bring back knowledge and awareness that there is more to it than what is on the surface. The soldiers who have dedicated their lives to their country should be cared for with great kindness. It is a bit upsetting that after all they have given to aid the defense of our country, they are the large percentage struggling with PTSD. It is commendable that this author is shedding light on the silenced community of individuals who want to live an after-battlefield life of normalcy. They deserve that, especially after what they put on the line.

A few Bible verses throughout the book could be useful references in relieving any symptoms of PTSD. What stood out the most were testimonies from veterans who took the time to either read the Bible before bed or play God’s word as they slept, which proved positive results. The author advised to keep the Word of God close to one’s heart as a member of the military, preventing potential dangers of PTSD. With an encouraging and teaching tone, no one should feel judged but loved. The best part is receiving an effective method to cope and heal from mental issues via scriptures, and the experience comes with no side effects of any kind. Due to an increase in secular lifestyles, many stopped embracing the fact of God’s existence because of the development of newer ideologies. Many people are considering seeking help from outsiders instead of within themselves. This book ensures that mental health is treated more seriously as members of our world are willing to help and do what is right. Maximizing the seriousness of traumatic experiences is key, there should not be any reason to invalidate what another person is going through.

Overall, the strength in numbers would always stand out over anything against God. Life might have been different if churches were as deeply involved in teaching their community. In the end, the goal is to open people’s eyes and guide them into a healthier understanding that you need God in your life. By learning this along with reading the Bible, there won’t be any excuses if you’re behaving against your belief. I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with any mental illness, this book will encourage a better route that involves love.  This book serves as a powerful resource for anyone seeking a faith-centered approach to emotional healing. This is not to replace professional medical or psychological treatment, however it does serve as a powerful supplement for those looking to incorporate faith into their healing journey.
