“When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been – and there you will always long to return.” Leonardo DaVinci. Bush Pilot is a swift-moving and lucid memoir of Ron Carpenter as he takes readers through his flying adventures in the skies, some of the places he visited, and his unique experiences.
Author Ron Carpenter gives first-hand experiences into the world of flying airplanes and gives readers an insight into the work schedule of a pilot. He starts by mentioning how a flying trip over Glendale, Arizona, with Hank, a policeman, friend, and plane owner makes him develop a fascination for flying. He and his wife began taking flying sessions from Bob, a family friend, and plane instructor, and end up purchasing two airplanes at different times. Thereafter, he takes up pilot jobs and years later, becomes a bush pilot, before his retirement.
As the author puts it, being able to fly helps a person drive better. It makes one more aware of what is happening around you. He describes his flying experiences as adventures. From flying floatplanes in Alaska, his narrations prove that he was a go-getter and no challenge was too big for him. Bush Pilot talks about the miscalculations he made while flying and how his rigorous training gave him an edge during such circumstances.
I enjoyed how the author did not create a near-perfect picture of himself in his memoir but gave readers a look into some of the challenges he faced in his journey to become a professional pilot and how he dealt with them. Bush Pilot is a vibrant celebration of a dream well achieved. Ron’s passion for flying is evident in his narrations. It is easy for a reader to pick up the warm tone that he uses to describe every job he did until he eventually became a bush pilot in his fifties.
Readers in the field of aviation will have no problem navigating through this easy, enjoyable, thought-provoking book – but others may have to look up some the terms for their meanings. All things considered; it is a delightful read that resonates so well with the saying: “The sky is the limit!”
