Pastor Ron Craig has gathered scriptural references combined with his own deep Christian conviction to present the case that John Calvin, a voice of the Protestant Reformation, was entirely wrong in his teaching of the doctrine of predestination widely known as Calvinism.

From the opening words of this dynamic thesis, Craig offers an array of Calvin’s assertions, many of which were supported with the teachings and philosophy of Augustine, a saint of the Catholic church in an earlier era. While presenting the literal texts from Calvin’s doctrines, Craig presents his own opposing beliefs in strict, judicious language. Calvin taught the fall of Adam was predestined by the very God who had created him, and that through Adam’s failure to obey God, all humanity would be heir to the same flawed character. Therefore, according to Calvin, God predestined a heavenly reward for one portion of humanity, while another certain portion will be inevitably consigned to eternal hell. To Craig, this basic assumption about the unavoidable destiny forced on people by God is contrary to the true Bible-based perspective that holds that each person has free will to obey God and love Jesus or follow the lure of Satan. In supporting his emotively presented theme, Craig quotes from copious biblical references, while pointing out that Calvin rarely did so. Calvin’s primary conception of predestination therefore has little if any scriptural underpinning and is in fact contrary to the biblical ideals embodied especially in the life, teachings, and sacrifice of Jesus. In Craig’s view, it is the truth of God, not of men like Calvin, that sets one free. His consistent message throughout is the powerful assertion that “Calvinism is a curse, which must be exposed and eliminated!”

Craig, a pastor and author who has previously composed treatises on this and other significant spiritual concepts, writes with an insistent verve that makes his book highly readable. He makes a salient, solid case that what Calvin propounded was in total opposition to God’s will and wish for humankind. He builds his thesis by looking at the topic from a multitude of viewpoints, constantly urging readers to choose “indisputable Bible evidence” over the writings of John Calvin. His emphatic prose gives a sense of his genuine concern for the subject matter and his wish that others take his words to heart. Readers of this weighty discourse will include both those who agree with its precepts and those who may feel a need to delve more deeply into the subject matter. Therefore, Craig’s work can and should provide focus for spirited study groups and serious individual contemplation.
