Divided We Fall follows the story of Ethan Bradley, his wife, and his family. Ethan is accomplished in his career and life, but along the way, things start falling apart. He is seen as a threat for how he lives, and even wanted by the state for his views on the second amendment. Things are also not looking good in his personal life as his wife leaves him, and so do other associates. Ethan Bradley is the main character that you want to follow. The man is aggressive, focused, confident and trusts his word. He believes his truths, and is not shaken by minor inconveniences. Ethan’s wife Martha is intelligent, and a go-getter. She is also a liberal, which makes her character more interesting.
Author Carl Berryman in his dystopian fiction novel tells the story of a great man, while highlighting issues that affect modern day America and the status quo. Through the main character, the reader is informed on geo-politics, social issues, the political climate and global affairs. The author’s style of narration gets one hooked to the story as he is engaging and amusing. The tone applied by Carl Berryman can tell the reader how displeased he is with the status quo. Despite writing a fictional book, Carl Berryman’ s views on certain political quarters are evident, and one cannot help but reflect on the state of the land of the free and other countries.
One thing I adore about Carl Berryman’s work is his description style. The author is graphic, detailed and clear. When writing about Ethan Bradley’s mission, the author gets the reader to feel like they are present with the main character. Reading about how governments work, the Army, and biological warfare and socio-economic issues was enlightening. The author understands how to get the reader interested in insightful topics through engaging words. The conversations between characters are also interesting, my favorite being conversations between Ethan and Martha, and Ethan and Robert. The choice of words and banter that emerged in the chapters were interesting.
There are a dozen themes that appear in Divided We Fall. Amidst the excellent storytelling, the author shared views on how things should be run, giving the reader the chance to have a different perspective from that fed by the media and governments. Some of the major themes were on war, history, international relations, constitution, the law, patriotism, the military, family, career, and the role of the media – among others. As a dystopian novel, the reader gets engrossed in the superb storytelling and how articulately the author presents his points. Carl Berryman has a terrific style and his work is incredible. The main plot is easy to follow and the characters are likeable. Divided We Fall is a great read if you enjoy fiction novels that touch on real life issues and situations.
