Family is such a complex dynamic to dive headfirst into. The relationships we build amongst ourselves, from siblings and parents to spouses and relatives, are deep seated in emotions. While the best of us are able to maintain strong family relationships that can withstand the test of time, not everyone is as lucky, and oftentimes the people who hurt us are the ones who are meant to love us the most. Far too often are cases of parents who abuse or take their children’s lives, and vice versa. Yet some of the most contentious and brutal frayed relationships within a family are between siblings.
In author Marvina Sims’s Duplex Occurrence, the author explores both family and trust amongst twins. The story follows twins Sli and Snake Maldive, twins who find themselves at war with one another when the theft of Sli’s property leads to accusations, brutal threats, and deception. Soon Sli finds herself targeting her own niece and nephew, determined to gain retribution for the slight she feels has been dealt to her, and no one, not even innocent bystanders, will be safe from their battle.
The author did such an incredible job of capturing the raw emotions and tone of this theatric drama. The chemistry between this cast of characters not only highlighted the authors brilliant eye for detail but also showcased a powerful ability to capture diverse voices and engage readers to deliver a unique perspective. The culture and atmosphere the narrative embodied elevates the imagery and very theatric undertones of the story, meshing well to deliver a captivating story of rivalry, family, and the underlying themes of violence, power, and abuse.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy drama and theatrical plays, especially those who enjoy Black & African American dramas and comedic dramas and plays. Something that also stuck out to me as a reader which was truly unique and interesting was how the author was able to incorporate music so effortlessly into the narrative, as if each new song played into the developing narrative and changes to the characters as the “play” progressed. Something that readers will also notice is the mature language and story that the “play” follows, making this a very mature and thought-provoking read.
Thoughtful, beautifully-written, and hauntingly engaging, author Marvina Sims’s Duplex Occurrence is a must-read drama, play, and overall narrative. The chilling reality of this family’s downfall and the equally harsh atmosphere the characters find themselves in loom large over this heartbreaking story of violence, vengeance, and unbridled power that drives a wedge between this family.
