Evolve: An Anthology of Horra/Thrilla Novellas is a collection of super gripping stories which are easy to read and follow. Author LaErtes Muldrow’s book is the kind of book you read on an easy day, as every story in the book is enjoyable. There are four stories, each with an excellent plot, twists, and exciting characters. LaErtes Muldrow’s tales are distinct and wildly amusing. Each story brings a different energy, with the stories covering themes of power, family, superstition, love and entertainment – among others. The beauty of anthologies such as this is that no two stories are the same. If you find one story plain, then you are assured the next will be more intriguing and stimulating.
The first story in the book is titled ‘Complex.’ I like how the author starts with uncomplicated words, being descriptive, and gradually introduces the characters. When LaErtes Muldrow talks about the clouds, you physically feel as if you are looking at them. When describing a character, the reader can picture their physique and mannerisms with ease. In ‘Complex’ we have characters like Nyah, Omar, and Deven, each being very different from the other. The story gets more intriguing when we are introduced to Pyriel. He is a man who is trying to stay under the radar. Pyriel wants to stay hidden, but the apartment he lands in brings more trouble. The kids he finds in his supposed new place do not make things easier for him, so he has to think harder. I thoroughly enjoyed this story because it shows the reader the varying thinking capacities among people of different ages and how friendship dynamics are fascinating.
The second story is titled ‘Thermal.’ Now, if you enjoy tales about other worlds, superstition, witches, and voodoo, this will be your favorite story. There is nothing too creepy about the characters, and the storyline gets better with every narration. The third story is titled ‘Harvester.’ This was like a feel-good story for me. I liked the characters and enjoyed the narrative and plot. The last story was as great as the other three. Titled ‘Need’ – you are not sure what the concept behind the title is until you start reading it. The story revolves around the entertainment industry and has themes of sex, romance, beauty and music. The author is explicit in his narration and sometimes uses strong language. Every story is flawlessly narrated.
I like that the stories are short and have unrelated plots. Some of the book’s twists are unpredictable, making the reading even more interesting. I recommend Evolve: An Anthology of Horra/Thrilla Novellas to readers who are looking for thrilling, charming and entertaining books. LaErtes Muldrow’s work is commendable as he made the stories enjoyable. Lovers of anthropologies and short stories will appreciate every bit of this book. I believe the brevity of the stories and book in general and the pleasant language will attract both young and older readers.
