How does an apocalypse come about? Is it by accident or design; by God or by Man? A young man works for a nuclear plant, and he decompresses by engaging in recreational drug use. One errant action leads to the accidental deployment of nuclear weapons, triggering Armageddon. Into this broken world George Elandier Evansen or Gee is born. He was rescued in the aftermath of the destructive bombings of many cities. Gee survives by scavenging for food and other worthwhile materials on the streets. To underestimate Gee by his aw-shucks demeanor is to your regret. Gee may be young, but is scrappy. He will fight for what’s right in every situation. A flight from a group of bullies leads to the discovery of a large cache of goods. Gee possesses a magical ability to gain access to these goods almost at will.
Gee’s family renders new meaning to dysfunctional. His only real connection is to his sister. Gee learns to his horror that his sister has been sold into slavery by his step-brother. Gee inflicts a near fatal thrashing upon him that is eventually ended by the police. Gee leaves his home and embarks on a trip to find a new place. His scrounging capabilities are admired by shop owners and the police, yet thieves and scammers look to exploit Gee. In a world of diminishing resources, whether it be salt or antique firearms, Gee is considered the man to see.
Gee is content just to exchange his discoveries for food and just live until he aids a young woman in distress. He saves Maria, a young girl close in age to Gee’s sister. He wallops her abusers and nurses Maria back to health. Gee is an ally of law enforcement and a friend to those in need. The oppressors fear him, and his friends never doubt his unswerving loyalty.
Gee is a positive tale about the most negative of scenarios, dwelling in a damaged world. Gee quickly proves a worthwhile protagonist worth getting behind in his attempts to persevere in decaying society. Gee’s supernatural abilities are only outdone by his depth of compassion. Author D.L. Davies has created a character whose circumstances are tragic, but possesses an inner resolve which speaks volumes. Gee has no quit in him, which makes him all the more worthwhile.
Gee will appeal to the lover of Fantasy/Fiction as well as dystopian novels, and is an excellent read from start to finish.
