In recent years, one of the planets biggest concerns has been the clashes with catastrophe in which we, as a species, have had to face. From the environmental disasters threatening our planet due to climate change, to dangerous rhetoric facing once civilized countries, and the never-ending threat of nuclear war over the last century, it appears that for every great advancement in technology or science that makes the future seem brighter, a chilling new development pushes us further and further towards disaster. As H.G. Wells once said, “Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe.”

In author Francisco Nieto’s Hell’s Fury Unleashed, the theme of catastrophe becomes the central theme of a tale of five young men who must face the end of civilization as they know it. In a world not too dissimilar to our own, soaring temperatures and droughts have plagued California for years, and soon a shocking strike of disaster leaves the world on the brink of collapse. In the shocking aftermath, these five young men must traverse a brutal landscape for survival and find a way of coming to terms with the havoc and confusing nature of the world they now live in.

I was truly impressed with the author’s attention to detail and the descriptive nature of the novels’ scenery and setting. As someone who lived in Southern California for the majority of my life, I found myself instantly transported back to these familiar landscapes and locations, especially the Cajon Pass, as this disaster in the novel hit the state. The scenes of each chapter felt very alive and gritty in its approach, capturing the raw emotional and physical effects of facing an apocalyptic landscape in the face of such a disaster.

This is the perfect read for those who enjoy fictional tales of natural disasters, apocalyptic futures, and action and adventure stories of survival. This book also does employ some degree of religion into its narrative, delving into themes of faith and how a lack-of-faith in a country can lead to disastrous results both morally and literally. The survival aspect of the narrative was not only entertaining but thought provoking, as the nature of our planet’s climate and the recent horrors our world has faced over the last few years have made these types of scenarios seem less fictional than it once was.

Haunting, engaging, and brilliantly written, author Francisco Nieto’s Hell’s Fury Unleashed is a must-read disaster narrative of 2022. The story flows smoothly and the characters are both realistic and captivating in their approach to this shocking turn of events. In the end, this is a story of how to find hope and the will to survive when facing almost impossible odds, and how to rely on one another to do so.
