Nature calls in many ways, yet the very most common is passing gas, yes, a toot. In author Eileen Tanaka-Sylvia’s light-hearted book titled, It’s Okay, I Toot Too!,readers are taken into a series of situations with personified animals, each “tooting” in the presence of others. Butterflies drop from the air when venturing into the green-gaseous cloud emanating from a character’s butt, and flowers wilt with the smell. Was it the beans eaten earlier? We all know beans create lots of gas.
Everyone laughs at a good fart joke, and this book uses the word “toot” instead, but we all know what it means. Even the illustrations are anointed with a greenish cloud of stinky, smelly, odors hovering around the rear-ends of the characters. In a way the theme is saying it is ok to toot – everyone does it, without having to apologize or excuse oneself. As this book is read to youngsters, I can imagine the grins and laughter amidst the narrator’s foul mist.
My favorite philosophical line is on page 15, saying, “God made our bodies each a perfect one – He threw in the toots to make life fun.” That says it all.
It’s Okay, I Toot Too! is geared to the youngest of youngsters, just past the diaper stage I would guess. It is a book which you will want to read time and time again, especially after a dinner with beans! Kids will laugh as parents will chuckle – everyone will have a good time with such a light-hearted subject. (Methane is lighter than air).
So let your rectal Sphincters relax, and pick up It’s Okay, I Toot Too! A toot while reading this book will make for indelible memories for all children and parents reading together. Of course, you can always blame it on the dog! This book is a great way to introduce conversations about health and bodily functions to young ones.
