In a world known for cruelty and chaos, kindness is often the light that pierces the darkness for many people. As Lao Tzu once said, “Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.” Teaching children at a young age the power of kindness and bravery in the face of adversity is a necessary tool in any parent’s arsenal.
In author Gloria D. Gonsalves’ Lamellia: The Wizard In The Forest, children and parents alike are treated to a story of a Kingdom in turmoil. After a kind King is forced to imprison his Queen when her singing causes discomfort and their child to become sick, members of his Kingdom begin to disappear. The Princess helps lead a voyage to discover the mystery of the Wizard in the forest and the true cause of the Queen’s Sad Song.
The author does a great job of mastering the children’s novel narrative, crafting a magical kingdom of mushrooms and magic as a young Princess must challenge the powerful Wizard of the Forest, and discovers much more about her past than she thought possible. Children will be able to see a clear-cut theme being taught to be brave in the face of adversity, to channel kindness into your heart over manipulation and evil, and to face the consequences of one’s actions.
This is a book for children and parents both who enjoy children’s books, action and adventure stories and children’s stories with important themes and messages. It was interesting to see the combination of fantasy driven action with a meaningful narrative that will help inspire and educate children as they read.
Overall, this was a memorable and easy to read book filled with beautiful artwork, a great and well-rounded story, and memorable characters that embody that fantasy driven element of the narrative.
