Lots of Luck Noblesse Oblige Rentier is a quietly powerful work of fiction penned by Ron Matejka. Staff Sergeant Dan Mastik’s faith in God along with a special gift that he had received from a special girl many years ago, had kept him afloat during the difficult times being deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq. During his flight back to the States, the forty-five-year-old man reminisced on his childhood days, his life in combat, his present, and his future. He now felt it was time to retire from the military and start a new life for himself.
Dan had a special longing in his heart, to look for a girl, now a grown woman, with whom he had shared his first teenage kiss. Sophie Sandori had lived a few blocks from where he lived when they were young, and in eighth grade she had given him a sentimental object, a beaded key holder which Dan had held on to, believing it was a lucky charm which had blessed him with good luck numerous times. His memories of her had been rekindled at one point in his state duty and a longing to find his lost love which had lingered in his heart, driving him to his unrelenting pursuit. The fate of these two kindred spirits is marred with unexpected outcomes and challenges, but eventually soar together on the wings of affection.
Ron Matejka has written a remarkable tale that tugged at my heartstrings perhaps because of its verisimilitude. His spare and powerful writing style dives deep into the emotions, temperaments, and musings of his well-hewn characters, revealing a narrative which reads more like a real story. The dignity of his characters springs from the pages in a swift entrechat, as he successfully captures their past, present, and future – eventually giving them a decent send-off. This is not a book that should just be read for pure escapist entertainment but rather with feeling and understanding. It’s a tale whose prose is free-flowing and thus needs little or no effort to get immersed in, having you swooning in no time. The book’s beautifully illustrated cover along with its brevity is a divine duo and a win-win in equal amounts. Contemporary romance enthusiasts will find much to savor in Ron Matejka’s Lots of Luck Noblesse Oblige Rentier. I certainly look forward to the author’s next port of call.
