A few books are written with a special personal intent. More often than not, those books stand out for the intense reading experience they deliver. My Final Re-Spot: A Young Sailor’s Misfortune on the Flight Deck of the USS Forrestal CV-59 authored by US Navy veterans, John Pugioti and Wesley E. Etheridge Sr. does exactly that.
The writers’ intent in writing this book is to bring to light the exact scenario surrounding the January 15th, 1978 US Air Force mishap. Though we have already had numerous accounts of the accident, My Final Re-Spot gives a fuller picture of the sailors’ misfortune owing to the involvement of the insiders in its creation and use of the breakdown of statements captured from the countless interviews of the survivors.
The writers take an unhasty route to uncover the truth. As a result, we get a book that explores the accident and its aftermath in detail. Not just that, the writers also briefly mention how a similar accident that took place in 1967 has changed the way the Navy responds in case of such emergencies. In addition, they also shed light on what their usual days looked like onboard a US Naval Aircraft, the camaraderie among servicemen, and the mental side of it. All this, and the duo still managed to wrap up the book in a little over 100 pages. That’s dealing with the truth, no fluff!
All things considered, it’s a gripping read that at no point strays off the subject and gives readers a good glimpse into the unfortunate day of the US Air Force. If you are someone interested in the operations of the armed forces and how they navigate tough times, this is a perfect read for you. An avid reader looking to have a solid quick read would also like it. We’d recommend you make this one your next read if you don’t already have something on your mind. It’s detailed, backed with facts, and tells something important. My Final Re-Spot is excellent for readers interested in military memoirs that emphasize personal experience, this book provides a moving and insightful read.
