Of Whom Fortune Favors by J. Scot Witty is the second book in The Hibernia Chronicles. The central focus of book two is on unmasking the forces behind the persistent attacks on Hibernia. Although the imperial army of the Caledonians, who have invaded the territory of Hibernia, are greatly implicated, some things don’t add up.
Lord Aviticus, the most feared general of the Caledonian Imperium, needs someone to deliver a treaty to the Duchess of the Marche and leader of Hibernia, lady Ysbeth, and convince her to sign it. Clebis, a renowned commander of the imperial army, along with Toran, Ballenger, Lady Fayette, and Dar LaCross, soon finds himself hunting those who seek to destroy the already fragile peace in the land while also trying to convince Lady Ysbeth and the people of Hibernia that the Caledonians aren’t their enemies. The mission is far from smooth, as different obstacles rear their ugly heads. It isn’t long before he finds himself wondering if it is bandits perpetrating these attacks or if he has been sent on a wild goose chase while the imperial army schemes behind his back. Or could it be something else entirely?
The narrative flows in such a way that following the storyline is very easy. The consistent character development is adequately highlighted by the use of an omniscient narrator. For example, by the end of the mission to discover the culprits behind the attacks on the people of Hibernia, Ballenger’s character reinforces the lesson of not making assumptions and hasty judgments about people. Lady Fayette is also an interesting character, as she experiences changes that are nicely done and show her growth. The plot is also beautifully adventurous and engaging, which makes it easy to get absorbed in the story from page one. Plus, the descriptions are sufficient and make the book come alive, enough to even imagine it as a cartoon series. Book three is definitely worth looking forward to, as the cliff-hanger ending of book two left many questions to be answered.
Although this is book two in the series, the sufficient summary at the beginning of the book makes it possible to read it without feeling lost. Anyone who enjoys an engaging and creative adventure and action novel will be interested in checking this book out. The light sprinkling of romance makes it suitable to be read by pre-teens.
Of Whom Fortune Favors is a well-thought-out novel packed with essential life lessons told in an engaging way that ensures the page is continually flipped until there suddenly aren’t any pages left to flip. It is an adventurous and engaging tale.
