If you fancy books that start at a slow pace but pick up once you are three chapters in, then On the Edge of Tomorrow should be your next read. Author Lyle D. Westbrook wrote a wonderful book, a bit slow at first, yet picks up and gets to be as interesting as they get. This book is one of a kind – because unlike other books where the reader follows the story through a human main character – in On the Edge of Tomorrow, one follows the story partly through a dog named Duke. I appreciate the concept of having a dog as one of the main characters, because it gives a different outlook, and also shows how creative the author is. Duke the dog is loved not just by readers who are pet owners, but by fans that adore animals as well.
We follow the story of Nathan Masterson, a washed-up telepathic archeologist with his dog, Duke. Mr. Masterson and his dog live a pretty decent life. One day he gets a special request from his friend. The request is for Masterson and his intelligent dog, Duke, to crack the mysteries of a distinct cave system along the British Columbia coast. Mr. Masterson and his best friend are up to the task, and it gets exciting with every step they make. This cave system is like nothing you have seen before. The reader is made to learn about weird and unheard-of creatures, and a fascinating ancient alien race.
The events which happen while unlocking the cave system and when they return home get more electrifying with the developing storyline. On the Edge of Tomorrow is an attention-grabbing book where you get to virtually go on numerous adventures while at the comfort of your home. One great thing about Lyle D. Westbrook’s writing is that you feel every event, and every move the characters make. His style of vibrantly describing characters and places is top notch, and makes the reader enjoy every bit of the plot. The stimulating adventure is just one among many great elements in the book. Readers get to learn much about archeology, espionage, and crime, all showcased in an exciting perspective. The crime element is fascinating when the FBI and CIA get involved, when one of the main characters gets attacked, and also when a plot to eliminate the head of state is exposed.
On the Edge of Tomorrow is a full-packed fantasy and science fiction book which is entertaining through and through. The author is not only artistic, but also original. With every new plot is a new character readers will find interesting; Beltran Velasco was that character or me. He comes out as a villain at first but the reader gets to enjoy him as a character once they learn of his thought process. Beltran Velasco is a favorite character for readers that appreciate the role of the bad guy in a story. This is a lengthy read, but in this reviewer’s opinion, more pages and events to enjoy.
