The pursuit of the truth is a hard-fought and hard-won battle that many of us have to undertake at one point in time or another in our lives. The pursuit may be for personal truths that speak of a family secret or some unknown personal drama, or they can be larger truths that impact the world at large. As Galileo Galilei once said, “All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.”
In author REV Gordon R Hackel D H L’s “Once Upon a Time in the American Revolution”, both personal and societal truths become the central focus as the author uncovers a truth that impacts American History as we know it. Studying the life of his ancestor, Captain John Kemper, he discovers that he was the ultimate spy, serving under George Washington himself. Captain Kemper’s family lineage of serving under the King of Prussia, Frederick the I, years before the revolution made him the perfect choice for Washington’s gambit, to allow himself to be captured and taken prisoner by the British. From his family’s history to infamous battles like Valley Forge and more, the author delves into some of the American Revolution’s greatest and most impactful moments in history.
This was a powerful, well-researched and detailed read. The author does a great job of balancing personal family history with the way of life, the harshness of war, and the extensive research and records that illustrate the revolution as a whole. The author lays out in detail the research that revealed this personal connection to the American Revolution, from in-depth family records and artifacts to the state and national records that held the family history that outlined the path Captain Kemper took serving under Washington’s Orders.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy history, personal family history and lineage stories, and non-fiction reads that blend personal experiences with well-documented moments. As a fan of history and American History especially, this was an incredible read that delved deeper into the inner-workings of life in that era than many other books within this genre. From the author’s exploration of Captain Kemper’s work with Native American scouts and his relationship with them to joining the Navy and more, the author has brilliantly explored and shared the life of John Kemper.
Thoughtful, detailed and lengthy yet engaging all at once, author REV Gordon R Hackel D H L’s “Once Upon a Time in the American Revolution” is a must-read for history buff’s and non-fiction biography fans out there. A much more personal and up-close look into American History than many textbooks can offer, this is a fantastic look into the utilization of spies and how life during the American Revolution came to be, especially for Captain John Kemper.
