Power is one of the most sought-after things in the world. Power comes in so many forms and meanings, it is almost impossible to find someone who isn’t coveting it in one form or another. Whether it is a struggle for political power or for the power to overcome fear and find love, power is a cornerstone of human civilization as we know it. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment.”

In author Ryan Browning’s Patricians: Sinful Seven, the author explores the nature of power through a futuristic setting. In the novel, Henry Williams heads the Williams Family, a powerful family who has gained power and influence through his founding of Muse Industries, which develops cybernetic implants and cyber technology as a whole. The demand for these implants grows his wealth and influence, and with that comes jealousy and greed as he faces an attack from the shadows. A failed attempt to kidnap his daughter shows Henry that seven powerful families are sending agents of espionage and chaos to bring Henry’s world crashing down around him, and Henry must learn who he can trust quickly in order to protect his daughter.

This is a fantastic read! The author really sells the high stakes action and futuristic danger which fills this world early on in the narrative, introducing readers to a bloody conflict that sees the main protagonist fighting for his life overseas, while his wife assures the public of the company’s future. The way the author weaves this narrative, from the action-fueled drama of Henry and his people facing off against various threats, to the family drama within the Williams Family and the differing politics that govern them, and the high-tech future that has not only given them their power, but has transformed the world landscape and brought attention to the use of privatized military forces by corporations, really shows an elegance and skill that cannot be replicated.

This is the perfect read for those who enjoy sci-fi novels, especially those that weave complex narratives of family, politics, and corruption at the corporate and government levels of our society. As a fan of sci-fi, I loved seeing the author tackle some truly heavy and thought-provoking themes with such a sci-fi heavy background and setting. The inclusion of memorable settings and public figures like Jon Stewart even early on in the narrative really helped sell this story as a possible future if technology were to advanced greatly.

A memorable, clever, and entertaining sci-fi and suspense narrative, author Ryan Browning’s Patricians: Sinful Seven is a masterclass in sci-fi thriller storytelling. The action and subtle politics of the narrative are felt early on, and the blend of complex themes and memorable character development all paid off with a massive and shocking cliffhanger which leaves readers ready and eager for the next chapter of this saga.
