Requiem for a Queen by Kaylin McFarren is a captivating occult fantasy about love, a struggle for power, and a mother’s fight for her son.
The protagonist, Samara Daemonium, is a Nephalem, part demon and part angel. Pregnant with the son of Lucifer, the King of Hell, Samara is determined to escape his armies. All she wants is for Papillon to grow up as righteous and kind, away from the demonic influence of his father. With the help of Onoskelis, Samara manages to keep him hidden from Lucifer for six years. But when the power-hungry Queen Lucinda, intent on gaining the throne of hell, kidnaps Papillon, Samara is forced to fight a tough battle. Finally, armed with a wish from the kindly sprite Eva Luna, she returns to the Underworld and reveals her son’s existence to Lucifer.
Intent upon the quest for her son, Samara is forced to reckon with the Witches of the Eternal Flame, a mighty dragon named Vetis Kidadl and the demon hunter Botis. She also needs to be wary of Lucifer’s manipulative nature. But a mother’s instinct to protect her child is fierce and burns bright in Samara’s soul.
Meanwhile, the Red War rages and several humans and demons are sacrificed in the ensuing bloodshed. Samara, her entire Nephalem family, Damian and Botis are all affected by it. Devastated by the loss of his mother and intent on destroying as many demons as possible, Botis sets out on a perilous quest. But unfortunately, the demon hunter, who starts out as a saviour, eventually falls prey to evil and reaps the consequences of his actions.
Meanwhile, Samara is reunited with Damian, her beloved and her estranged family. The Nephalems help to keep her son safe from Lucifer. However, Lucifer soon manages to enrapture Papillon into staying with him. He makes Papillon use his powers for evil, prompting him to take drastic actions.
