One of literature greatest treasures is mystery. All manner of life’s greatest inventions, discoveries, and experiences have come from a bit of mystery. From the depths of the Mariana Trench to the ever-expansive Universe beyond our world, and the shocking revelations which have come from our own history, mystery has driven some of the greatest minds in the world to discoveries which are out of this world.
Yet that sense of mystery has also driven some of the best, most creative projects in the world. From beloved films and television to thought-provoking video games, modern day mysteries have become part of the tapestry of life for our society, even stretching into true crime. Yet one of the most iconic and classic forms of mystery is literature, and author Lauren Steinhauer has captured the heart of one of literature’s most profound fictional detectives; Sherlock Holmes. In the book Sherlock Holmes’ Lost Adventure: The True Story of the Giant Rats of Sumatra, the author takes Holmes and Watson on a cross-country trip on the Orient Express after thefts of typewriters leads to a murder investigation, and a new villain that will challenge the duo of investigators in ways they never could have imagined.
The author did a fantastic job of bringing the heart and intrigue of a good Victorian-era mystery to life in this narrative. Capturing the tone of a classic Sherlock Holmes novel from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle can be quite complicated, but the author manages to find the heartbeat of this narrative, balancing the unique character development between Holmes and Watson with the mystery itself. The introduction of romance, as well as the wit of the conversations between the two investigators really helped elevate the story, and will keep the readers engaged in the twists and turns the story reveals. The introduction of new villain, Hearseborne, to the story added a new level of skill and cunning for the great detective, and the shocking imagery which came from the introduction of the Giant Rats of Sumatra made this a memorable read.
Yet despite it all, the genre is what really came to life on the pages of this book, for this was the best read yet for anyone who is a fan of mysteries, especially those that involve investigative detective mysteries, thrillers, and suspenseful tales of Victorian-era storytelling. The flashes of imagery and thought-provoking storytelling really sunk into my mind, and the gripping air of mystery and heart-pounding suspense was enough to keep me on the edge of my seat in this breathtaking story. That is what makes this book such a powerful and must-read narrative, and if you have not had the chance yet, you should pick up your own copy today!
