Often, both in life and in literature, questions of identity tie into the idea of fate or destiny. Whether it is a noble farmhand who discovers he is secretly the next in line to be king, or someone in reality who discovers they are destined for a career in finance, the journey to discover a person’s identity can often feel like the call of destiny that so many people dream of. Yet fears of the unknown and the fate others place on a person can prove detrimental, even harmful to that journey of discovery every person needs in their life.
That is the question that faces the cast of characters in author Stephen A. Reger’s Storm Fall: Book Three of the Stormsong Trilogy. The story takes place in the year 1620, as a civil war between Austrian Catholics and Bohemian Protestants has been threatening to take down the Holy Roman Empire for years. However, two powerful half-sisters find themselves in their own personal civil war, as they both seek to unravel the mystery surrounding their heritage and the origins of their dark power. The shocking discovery of their father and the events that brought them all together will reverberate not only in their family, but throughout Europe as a whole.
The author did such a wonderful job of world-building in this narrative. The attention to detail the author paid to this story, from the culture and language used by the cast of characters to the dynamic and powerful setting, with its thrilling use of history and immersive surroundings, allows the reader to feel instantly transported into the world. The amazing character development of this novel, especially the relationship which formed and grew between Vanessa and Stephen, and the complex story of the sister’s battle with their grandfather no less, will enthrall and engage readers on a deep level.
For fans of fantasy, especially dark and historical fantasy fans, this is the perfect novel. A great conclusion to the first trilogy in this saga, the author did a wonderful job of exploring the mystery and intrigue surrounding the sister’s dark powers, and the history not only of their family but the war surrounding them in both their countries as well. A very Shakespearean take on the Thirty Years War, the novel expertly uses imagery in the writing to bring the European landscape to life so viscerally and the layered relationship within this family dynamic and how it reflects the history surrounding them will keep readers engaged happily until the book’s complete yet open- ended ending.
