In a day and age such as this, one of the things which has grown steadily is the level of cruelty and pranks children and students will play on those they deem weaker than themselves. As Scott Aukerman once said, “I guess when I was a kid I wasn’t the type of person playing a lot of pranks. I was the type of person upon whom pranks were pulled.” In author Dewey B. Reynolds’ novel Stuart Duffelmeyer and the Masters of Plagues, a prank turns into a supernatural nightmare and one young man must combat the evils of the world.
After a group of students at NYU play a cruel prank on Stuart Duffelmeyer, a great power rises within him as a powerful talisman awakens and he is given cosmic power like no other. Soon he gains control over the creatures and elements of the planet, and he begins using them to exact justice on those who commit evil deeds. Yet the need for revenge on his former classmates grows strong, and Stuart must navigate the desire to seek revenge versus the need to do good in the world.
This is a highly creative, fun and imaginative fantasy novel that is a great start to an overall fantasy trilogy. Incredibly detailed and a fairly quick and easy read, the book focuses heavily on world building and character development, giving readers a unique dive into a rarely explored mythology and religion in a fictional world; that of the Jewish people. Exploring the aspects of the Hebrew belief system and the way it correlates to the fantasy and supernatural elements of the tale makes for an engaging read overall.
This is a book for anyone who enjoys fantasy stories, revenge narratives and dealing with real life, adult situations using a supernatural element. As a fan of the fantasy genre it was both entertaining and engaging to be so immersed into this world the author created. In an age where bullying and cruelty is at an all-time high and the consequences both big and small are felt by everyone, exploring the concept of revenge vs forgiveness and learning from mistakes in this type of setting made for a truly enjoyable reading experience.
This is the perfect read for anyone looking to explore a unique fantasy series with a creative mythology infused with iconic religious beliefs and a story that sees the cruelest and most unjust individuals of the world facing their worst nightmares and seeing those who continuously get away with crimes finally face justice.
